The raft

The story and the tradition of the Sterke Yerke III

In 1978 plans were made to start the Sterke Yerke III with the construction of a third raft. This enabled the Frisians to reach the Netherlands Antilles in the year 1979. A raft built for the Frisian lakes but also for the Atlantic.

In 1974, a few boys started to build a raft in the Frisian capital of Leeuwarden. The first two rafts consisted of the floaters from oil drums. The last raft was built on sand press pipes. This made a crossing over the Atlantic in 1979. The crew consisted of four people.
